Marble Bar (or Jasper Bar)

Saturday 8th September (Happy Anniversary Jane & Glen). We went to Port Hedland for a look round and it is not as bad as people say and we have seen a lot worse. Of course it is all about mining up here, roads trains everywhere, the trains are so long it is unbelievable!!!   Left Port Hedland and travelled back East for 40klm and took a right turn down the Marble Bar Road. So 202klm South and we are at Marble Bar. Marble Bar “the hottest town in Australia” this fact is still recorded in the Guinness book of records. For 161 consecutive days leading up until 20th April 1924, the temperature never dropped below 37.8c and this record still stands until today.
Marble Bar is named after a local deposit of mineral first thought to be marble, but later turned out to be jasper, so it should be called Jasper Bar!!! Marble Bar is in the East Pilbara shire, which is also the largest Shire in the world. This is one of those places you have never heard of and no one mentions and you get here and the history is amazing. Of course we went to the Iron clad pub and got chatting to the locals, before we knew how much treasure there is here. We have been out to the Comet Gold Mine, flying fox, Jasper Deposit, Marble bar pool, Chinaman’s pool, the solar power station (Australia’s 1st) and the swimming pool.  Excellent!!!!
